After relaxing for a bit and recharging your batteries, hop on to our bus / jeeps from the main bus stand, heading to Ghera Village which is around 20 kms away. Ghera is a small village connected to a motorable road and has a few shops from where one can purchase last-minute supplies. After packing up on our last minute supplies and goodies we make our way towards Kareri Village via a bridge crossing over Bhote Khosi. The route takes us upwards, straight along the Kareri stream. Trekking along the pristine white river is a delight in itself. After a while in the forest, the trail leads us to a small Government School which is in Sari Village. The trek from Dharamsala to Kareri goes through pine forests and crosses several tribal villages on the way - Sari and Kareri Village being the two Gaddi Tribal Villages. You can interact with happy to go lucky kids who out of the world cute! Nice village people beckon you to spend time with them, tell you stories and help you with refilling your supplies etc. The trek from here is another 2 kms long ascent to Kareri Village. There are lots of small streams where you can refill your bottles. The water here has a refreshing taste of the mountain springs. The trail soon goes through a dense forest known as the Rhododendron forest. Making trekking sticks out of dry twigs and branches is highly recommended or you can bring your own trekking stick if you own one. The forest trail soon opens out onto a wooden bridge over the Kareri River. Kareri Village is about 30 mins from here. On reaching the village we settle down, relax and take in the rustic yet beautiful and peaceful village scene. Our guide and porters will start preparing lunch for us. After a hot well deserved meal by the river side, we explore a little more of the area around and connect with the more villagers.Kareri village at 6000 ft is a charming little village straddled on a sloping ridge and adorned with terrace fields at the outer fringes. To the east, the peaks of Dhauladhar Range washed in snow are standing on constant guard. You can either pitch in tents after dinner or stay at one of the rustic village home stays for the night!

Packed lunch will be distributed to each one of us. The trekking route takes us through a lot of small villages and spotting shepherds grazing their sheep is common. Many times you would be required to skillfully hop over large boulders to cross the tumbling streams, although the trail remains well-trodden. Soon the valley treveals the sight of the distinct mountains of Dhauladhar range, we finally reach the lake at around lunch time and start setting up camps.Kareri Lake at 9700 ft is a large but shallow oval shaped lake surrounded by small meadows and wooded patches on one side and towering peaks covered in snow on the other. The soft grasslands surrounding the lake provide ample dream like space to camp for the night. After the camp is set up we can take a dip in the Lake. The water is cold and refreshing after a long trek. We can indulge in various hiking activities, play a few games at the lake and just be around. Keep a lookout for the peculiar Himalayan Cobra Lily growing close to boulders strewn all around and explore the hills. Being alert and watchful while hiking you will definitely spot the gorgeous Asian Paradise Flycatcher – a medium sized bird with a long and impressive tail that moves with sheer elegance whenever it glides to hunt for insects.
